An Emergence of Social Media in Politics
With the recent defunding of Obamacare our nation stands on the edge of an economic meltdown. Since the House did not pass Obamacare the U.S. budget does not fly either. If a budget is not approved by the end of our fiscal year, essentially the government shuts down.
There is a great sense of distrust and miscommunication with our nation's leaders. Recent suggestions have come to the surface one of them being, social media.
A dose of social media would be an effective way of reconnecting with the men and women on Capitol Hill. Social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram provide a wide range of engagement which would be useful for government leaders to reconnect with citizens. Letters voice our opinion sure, but it might be a good idea if we hear from our leaders. Social media allows for two-way communication, much more effective at coming up with a solution the majority can agree on.
Imagine being able to tweet with Governor Cuomo about our state's debt. He is able to take questions, and reply back. This communication model allows for a mutual understanding that is beneficial to both parties. Who says it only has to be about work? Maybe Governor Cuomo has some insight on what the New York Yankees need to do save their rotation for next season. This allows a look into our leaders personality at a more informal level.
The possibilities are endless with social media. That being said, I do not believe Congresswoman Louise Slaughter should be tweeting things like: Lets bomb Syria #yolo #GOUSA. As always a tool should be used correctly.
