Over the past two decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been
widely recognized as one of the most successful franchises in all of
sports. With four Super Bowl appearances
(and two wins) and 15 winning seasons over a 20-year span, the Steelers seemed to
have reached the pinnacle of football success.
Meanwhile,
in the same city, the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team has had a whopping zero
winning seasons during the same time frame.
Their last playoff appearance was 1992 (which also happens to be their
last winning season), where they lost to the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. To put
that into perspective, George Bush Sr. was still in office at the time of their
last winning season.
All of this
was true, of course, up until this year, where the Pirates have amassed 88 wins and counting, thus breaking the streak of consecutive losing seasons. They are also a near lock for the playoffs,
which will end their postseason drought as well.
Ironically,
the Steelers have begun the 2013 football season 0-2, for the first time in over a
decade- and have looked awful in the process.
With the Pirates making the playoffs and the Steelers reeling,
Pittsburgh, PA seems to be witnessing a changing of the guard between two of
its beloved sports teams.
