Who Should You Follow?

This week twitter spread the news that it will now send personal notifications about who you should follow, based on who your friends have started to follow, or based on a post that has been re-tweeted or Favorited a lot.

So with this new update you will get push notifications on who you should follow to get up to date news or posts.

Who thinks this is creepy and an invasion of privacy? Is it strange that twitter is going to track this so closely now that this will be based on retweets?

How many of us follow @Magicrecs so we can get those personalized DM's on who to follow before this new feature came out?

It's cool that technology has come this far is able to track this and help us stay informed in the world.

Check out the article read some comments, on what others think about this, what are your feelings?

  1. I feel conflicted about this update. For my professional Twitter I think it would be a great way to build a network and be better informed. This update could help students such as ourselves to connect better with the professionals that we follow. At the same time for my personal Twitter this is too much. I was unaware of @Macigrec but I would prefer a DM to a push notification that has been tracking my life.

  2. To be honest, I do not know how I feel about this update. I do agree that it is cool that technology has come this far but it might be a little much. I'm not sure if I like the fact that they will be tracking my tweets, retweets, and favorites so closely. I think there should be an option on if you want these notifications on who to follow and if you want your account watched so closely. If it was an option I feel as if though people would not think it was an invasion of privacy. I also agree with Paige that it would most likely benefit professional accounts but I do not think there is a need for it for personal accounts where people normally follow people they know.

  3. Like the comments above, I am also not sure how I feel about this update. Getting suggestions on who to follow can help people in the Twitter world find other people with similar interests. However, I am a little concerned that Twitter will be tracking my tweets and who I am friends with. Also, when Twitter suggests people to follow now, before the update, I generally don't pay any attention to the suggestions because they aren't people I necessarily want to follow.

  4. I'm just starting out on twitter, but this all seems rather unnecessary. I think people already have a pretty good inclination of whom they want to follow on twitter; most will just disregard the notifications. I definitely agree with Alexandra about the notion of giving the account user an option.
