Businesses Expanding their Advertisments to Social Media Platforms

Nowadays we see advertising everywhere we go, from billboards to TV commercials. When it comes to advertising, it's assumed that we will expect the unexpected. Some companies go so extreme for advertising that it's almost not a shock to see out of the ordinary strategies anymore.

Businesses are even going as far as advertising on the social media platforms that teens are constantly on today, desperate for that extra 10 seconds of getting their product out there.

Snapchat, Instagram, and even Vine are being used to advertise nowadays. This could be a great strategy, especially since it's highly uncommon for people to actually sit and watch TV commercials. Most people go on their phones and browse their apps during these times, so it only makes sense to include these mediums for advertising.

"Snapchat images and video are available to users only for a short time, which is what makes marketing on the platform both risky and appealing," stated Amy Birch for Social Media Today. I think this is a good point; with the way our world is technologically advancing, users are more likely to watch a 6 second video rather than a 60 second one, so why not expand to a platform where you're likely to get more views?

  2. The use of new social networks such as Snapchat, Instagram and Vine is a great outlet for more advertisements. I agree with the fact that most people certainly go straight to their phones when it's time for commercials while they are watching television. I was actually scrolling through Instagram the other day when I came across my first advertisement. I had to pause and take a few moments to actually observe what the photo was, who posted it and why. The advertisement was for ice cream (unfortunately I forgot which brand was being promoted), and it was a photo of the sky with someone holding a cone up to it, utilizing the clouds as where the ice cream would sit on the cone. The photo was very intriguing and my attention was caught. With further observation, I noticed that the photo was actually an advertisement for a specific type of ice cream. I'm sure I am not the only one who was confused at first by the sight of an advertisement on my Instagram feed and I wonder how quickly people will catch on to the fact that these are advertisements and how they will be able to quickly spot them and scroll right past them. Or, this might be a great idea that will stick well and have great benefits for the advertisers.
