Technology as an Accessory

Wearable tech seems to be the newest trend. After the release of the new phones and updates were else could technology go, but to leave our hands and take over the rest of us. We saw it recently with the Samsung Smartwatch that connects to the user's phone. I also recently saw a classmate's blog that mentioned a camera that the user wears and it records information based on interest level. One of the biggest buzzed about wearable tech pieces is Google Glass. Doug Gross of CNN recently reported that the new Google Glass is coming soon.

Google Glass is an entirely handsfree operating system that lets users access e-mails, texts, maps, and Google searches with simple voice commands. The users can also capture life through the Google Glass with the ability to call upon the camera to snap pictures and videos.

The new Google Glass will work with eyeglasses and sunglasses and include an ear bud that is replacing a speaker in the current model. Currently there are roughly 10,000 testers or Explorers as they are officially known trying out the product. The Explorers were encouraged to invite friends to join them in the testing process for the new launch. This testing process is what has allowed Google to find flaws like the original bone-conduction speaker and create solutions that enhance the overall product.

Gross states in the article that "Glass has been a groundbreaker in wearable tech, a movement that's shaping up to be the coming wave in the technology world."

I have to wonder if we are taking technology too far. The high flow of social media and new trends that fill our phones today has had an impact on our face to face interactions. Image what it will be like trying to talk to people with Google Glass on, never knowing if they are listening to you or watching the latest YoutTube clip. I think it is incredible that people are able to produce such pieces of technology, but fear that more advances in wearable tech will leave us covered in gadgets. I don't think I would even wear the Google Glass because it appears somewhat strange and gives people a robotic look. I have to wonder how you guys feel about the product and whether you would wear it or not.

  1. I posted something about this a few weeks ago I believe! I agree that it might be a bit too advance and taking technology too far! However, as for it looking robotic, I am sure that eventually they will redesign it and make it look less robotic. After new technology comes out it always gets redesigned to look different and fit us better, just look at how far phones have come since they were invented. I am sure that if this is a hit (which it mostly likely will be) that they will continue to work on it and make it look completely different than the first model!

  2. This is really interesting. The design is not very appealing to me but like Alexandra said, I'm sure they will redesign it. I also do not like the robotic look so I hope that they change that. This is a really cool idea and feels very futuristic to me. Almost reminds me of something that you would have seen in one of the Back To The Future movies. I am interested in seeing where this invention goes and how it will develop in the future.

  3. This invention is really cool! However, it seems like it's giving us an opportunity to be more lazy. I feel like this new piece of technology will even be similar to the Bluetooth. As you said, it will be hard to tell whether or not someone is actually speaking, or listening, to you. It's a really interesting concept, I'm just not sure if I would use it or not. I already have a perfectly good phone that can do all of the same things that Google Glass will do, so I don't know if I would use this. This also presents a question to me. What laws will be implemented for this new product? Since they sit like glasses, people must be careful using this in situations such as driving.

  4. Google Glass already is out there in the real world on an experimental basis. One of my friends was selected as a beta user to experiment with it: http://jeremylittau.com/2013/07/31/glass-and-the-classroom-cans-and-cannots/
