Facebook has been a popular social media site with teenagers for many years, but now things are beginning to change. Studies show that teenagers activity on the site are actually decreasing, even though the amount of revenue Facebook is making is increasing. The audience for Facebook is slowly maturing as parents and grandparents have began to use the site, and teenagers have switched over to Twitter.

Although Facebook is still getting attention, the company is afraid that with the younger generation moving towards other media sites, the young adults will eventually switch as well. Then soon enough everyone will. This obviously could be a huge problem, because Facebook would lose all business.
My thoughts on this topic is that although teenagers are in fact moving more towards Twitter, they will never completely give up Facebook. Twitter is where most teenagers go to get away from their parents and family and just be themselves, but they are always going to want to have that connection with their families as well. In this case, I don't think that Facebook has to worry about losing their business, the only change that could potentially occur is it may turn into more of a family friendly site and environment.

I agree with your point about how teenagers will never completely give up Facebook even as more and more move towards Twitter. It is interesting to see the shift of parents moving to Facebook and teenagers moving to Twitter. Both my parents are on Facebook now but know nothing about Twitter. Hopefully the Twittersphere and tweets will continue to confuse them so myself and many other teens can continue to have some privacy.
ReplyDeleteFacebook's age shift in the past couple years has been crazy. I think that Facebook is going in the wrong direction based on the younger generation switching to Twitter. It's crazy to think that Facebook is still making a sustainable profit. Great Article and analysis!
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with you in that Facebook is definitely becoming a more family friendly environment. Facebook is seeing a decrease in users because the younger generations are switching to other media platforms. It'll be interesting to see if parents and other family members make the switch from Facebook to Twitter or other social media sites in the future. I think that this is unlikely however and will hopefully never happen!
