As many of us know comments on the internet can be, at times, extremely rude and inapplicable to the content that the comment was meant for. In an effort to address this, the worldwide video website YouTube is trying to make this less common.
YouTube is now making it so that the
channel owner may automatically delete comments that contain certain words. The
YouTube channel owner will be able to make what YouTube will be calling a
"blacklist". The "blacklist" will contain the words that
the channel owner does not want to see in the comments section below their
videos.
I feel that by YouTube doing this it gives
more control to channel and video owners. They should be able to monitor the
types of comments that show up under their videos. I think that by YouTube
doing this it will help prevent some bullying on YouTube. We all know that
bullying on the internet is a very big issue in our society, but by being able
to eliminate comments that contain words that can be considered
"bullying", it will help protect the victims.
It’s not only comments on YouTube that can
be the problem but comments all over the internet. I hope that by YouTube
stepping up and making this possible for its users that other websites will
step up and do the same.

This is an interesting action by Youtube. I understand their "black listing" and I hope this extends beyond YouTube but at the same time I doubt it'll be beneficial for this form of media. I can only think of a few "cold stone" bullying words. What if some words that are on the YouTube's channel owners "black list" are words that are taken out of context? The person's comment is blocked. I feel as though some offending words are not always offensive. It all depends on the context in which they are being used. Besides, channel owners have the power to remove comments in the first place. This will be interesting to see.
ReplyDeleteI think this is an absolutely great idea! I commend YouTube for doing this. It is definitely a step in the right direction in order to help eliminate cyber bullying. I hope to see the idea applied to other online media sources as well!
ReplyDeleteThat's actually really cool! I'm glad to see a social networking site standing up for such a huge issue. I see negative comments on YouTube everyday, so hopefully this will bring down, or even eliminate, the amount of internet bullying.
