F.C.C. To Allow Cell Phone Use on Flights?

On November 21st, the FCC announced that they would consider changing rules to allow passengers to use cell phones or other wireless-data devices on flights. However, the change must be placed the agenda for commission's meetings on December 12th. Therefore, the officials at the meeting can discuss the change, and come up with a result.

This change can increase the satisfaction of passengers on their flights. However, some passengers eye the use of cell phones or any wireless data devices as a distraction. Some airlines in Asia and Europe offer cell service. Airlines in the United States are opposing the use. Some flight attendants have met with the FCC and urged them "Not to proceed with the proposal. (Wyatt/Bilton)"

FCC officials are working to create a happy median with the supporters and the opposition of the proposal. They have mentioned installing equipment that at 10,000 feet would allow passengers to access mobile devices. Tom Wheeler, the chairmen of the FCC, thinks this proposal should be passed mentioning: “Modern technologies can deliver mobile services in the air safely and reliably, and the time is right to review our outdated and restrictive rules, (Tom Wheeler)”

I think the proposal to allow passengers to use mobile devices is a good idea. I agree with Wheeler, that if we have the ability to use it, and use it with the assurance of safety, than I think it is a good idea to accept the proposal. I feel many people would approve of this, and increase the satisfaction of the flight.

I can also understand the oppositions point of view on the proposal. Passengers have very limited areas of space, and i can see it being a problem when another passenger is invading in your personal space, when trying to use a mobile device. However, I don't see this as a strong enough factor to deny the proposal.

  1. I agree with you in that this is a good proposal and will increase the satisfaction of the flight for many people, especially on long flights when they need a distraction. I think if we have the technology to make this work without anything going wrong then we should do it. But I hope nothing goes wrong while in the air because everyone is using their mobil devices. Hopefully this gets sorted out and we are able to use devices while flying.
