Justice Brought to Instagram
Recently, an Instagram profile has been utilized to intimidate witnesses of violent crimes in Philadelphia, Penn. The hope was it would prevent the witnesses from ever seeing a court room.
The account even praised a firebombing that killed four children and two women. The account had around 7,900 followers and over 150 photos.
The account has been removed, but no evidence has been presented as to who the account holder may be.
This is an absolutely evil story, no doubt. We are constantly learning from these tools and the good we can do with them. It is sickening when we see them being used so negatively.
I would argue their is a slight positive in this story. Instagram has successfully been able to remove the account and are aiding investigators to track down the menace that was doing these terrible deeds.
It is comforting to see Instagram has a strict policy on bullying and harassment: it will not be tolerated. In the world we live in today bullying has become a pandemic. We still see grown men bullying each other in a professional setting, i.e. the Miami Dolphins debacle. With the world of social media ever expanding we need to make sure we keep the evil doers in check.
Instagram has handled the situation very well and I think they should deserve a pat on the back for it. I know other outlets of social media will follow the same, but I encourage others if you spot anything fishy there is no harm in making it aware to the officials.

I actually tweeted about this and I agree that Instagram did do a good job with regards to taking down the account. I wonder if there is any way to find out who is behind the Instagram, although I highly doubt it. The person who created the account must have some affiliation with the crimes that were committed which is sick to think that someone is that involved with the crimes that took place to the point where they felt the need to create an Instagram in order to threaten witnesses. I also wonder just how long it took Instagram to take down the profile (which I suppose should be the first thing asked before giving them any sort of praise). I'm especially curious because the creator somehow managed to obtain 7,900 followers and posted 150 photos which is difficult to do in a short period of time.
ReplyDeleteThis is a relief to know that Instagram is taking it so seriously and trying to figure out who did it. We have been hearing a lot about how positive social media can be, it's sad to see how negative it can also be. I don't think that this stuff will ever be prevented but knowing that it can be deleted is comforting. I agree with Alana, how long did it take Instagram to remove the page? Maybe they should work on a way to do so quicker, because I've seen numerous pages like this which have caused a lot of hurt to people.
