Tornado Victims Find Their Lost Items Through Facebook

A Facebook page has been created to help the victims of the tornado's get their belongings back. The name of the Facebook page is PHOTOS found from Nov. 17, 2013 Illinois Storms/Tornadoes. The Facebook page helped a couple that has been married for over 40 years find their 40th wedding anniversary photo.

The photo ended up in a backyard over 80 miles away from the Doolan's house in Washington, Illinois. The person that found the photo put it up on the Facebook page where a friend of the family saw it. The friend ended up contacting the Doolan's daughter to tell her that she saw her parents photo on the Facebook page. This was the first successful match using the page.

By using the Facebook page, many more victims were able to find their belongings again. This also showed how far some of the things in the storm had traveled. A victims paychecks ended up about 140 miles away from their residents.

There have been many more success stories from the use of this Facebook page and I am sure that there will be many more to come. Facebook has become not only a social media website, but now it has become a way for victims of tragedies to be reunited with their precious belongings.

  1. Amazing article! Facebook receives tons of negative press about their privacy issues and intrusive advertisements. It is truly great to see that Facebook has been recently used to do some good in the world! Facebook has the capacity to connect people from all over the globe. I love to hear that it it's recently been used to connect people with their lost keepsakes in the wake of a disaster. I'm sure this will set the precedent for future use of the site in a positive manner--especially when dealing with disaster relief.
