Facebook celebrates 10 years
On February 4th, Facebook celebrated it's 10 year anniversary of social networking service. Facebook has strived to improve their users' experiences with constant updates and additions. After the first year Facebook was released there were one million users on the network. Although the popular opinion among younger generations is that Facebook is declining, that is quite the misconception; 10 years later it now serves an audience of 1.23 billion users and it's users have increased each year. To celebrate being 10 years old, the site has released a special application called Look Back. Look Back allows users to watch a personalized movie, view a collection of their own top photos through their years on the site, or view a "thank you" card from the company.
Facebook has been working to add other applications to keep their site relevant, fresh and enjoyable for their users, such as the new app 'Paper' (http://mashable.com/2014/01/30/facebook-announces-paper/). Paper is a news reader mobile app that allows users to personalize their news feed according to their interests. Apps like this one and Look Back are examples of how Facebook is making constant attempts to make their site accessible and user-friendly for consumers young and old.

I agree with your statement that Facebook is not on the decline. I believe there is a change in the type of user, but it is still very popular. Facebook's ability to keep people interested with these new applications and improvements are great decisions in order to keep up with other social media such as Twitter, Instagram, and Vine. I don't see Facebook dying anytime in the near future.
ReplyDeleteNot everything about the new applications are positive. I've had discussions with a few people regarding the tenth anniversary "look back" application and they stated that they found them irritating and annoying. I'm sure they are not the only ones to share that opinion. Although, I don't believe this will change the usage of Facebook by people who don't like "look back," I do believe social media networks need to be very careful about these things because they are so frequently being compared to other networks.
Social media is very interesting, and Facebook will continue to be successful.
I agree that Facebook is not on the decline. While I don't personally use it as much as in the past, whenever I am on Facebook that amount of postings and interactions people have is still a great amount. I notice that it is used more for pictures and articles rather than writing on people's walls like in the past. There are still a large amount of users, as the article says too.
ReplyDeleteIt will be neat to see how new apps using Facebook such a "paper" will change the views and use of Facebook users.
