Ban Employers from asking for Social Media Passwords

I've talked to many people over the past few years that have applied for jobs and was shocked to learn that many of them were essentially forced to give their social media passwords to their potential employer so they "snoop" through the individuals personal life. I have often discussed this with people and my opinion has always not swayed. I believe the fact the employers feel they have the right to look through your personal online life disgusting.

Many people disagree with me and state that now that we live in a digital age where everything is available online you have to expect this kind of thing to happen, others say don't post stuff online that you don't want your employers to see. Others even argue that if you are a professional it is not good to even have a "personal" social media account.

I disagree with this completely, since when has it been okay to intrude on every nook and cranny of someones life, did employers in the past ask to see potential employees photo albums? Did they try to intrude on their personal lives and believe everything they learned from minutia detail? I think not. I feel it should stay the same today, just because we have this new medium known as social media, I don't believe that gives the employer the right to intrude on people's privacy just because it's on the internet.

However it looks like America is finally coming around and realizing how unjust this believed principle is. Maryland has already taken the offensive and has banned employers from asking for potential employees passwords and it looks like Florida is not far behind.

There is a bill going through the state of Florida that would also ban employers for asking for passwords and it has already passed through state senate committee unanimously. The bill has a number of hurdles to still get through but at least it looks like some progress is being made and this "intrusion" on people's privacy can end.
