Facebook as the new gateway for surveillance

The National Security Agency (ASA), has recently been guilty of infecting private computers through false Facebook websites in order to implant surveillance software. When the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg, heard of these recent reports, he quickly took action to relieve the problem. His frustration lead him to inform the President of what was going on. The company's chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, has been making security adjustments to the website to ensure its safety from surveillance breaches by the NSA and other interlopers.

With the new SSL data encryption, they are able to keep track of all the web traffic that occurs on the site. This solution has made it nearly impossible to hack the system. Sullivan ensured the public that this "particular attack is not viable" (2014). Writer, Cade Mets, was informed that Facebook was not only using the most basic safety precautions like SSL, but Facebook also "installed technology that uses similarly hefty encryption techniques to protect information that flows between the massive data centers that underpin its online empire" (2014).

This surveillance scare has already effected other social media outlets such as Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. They have started the process of making their systems secure with the most basic steps in order to guard against interloper attacks.

Before we used to be afraid of what we said over the telephone for the fear of being overheard by the government. Now we must fear an entirely new form of government surveillance. My generation has been told to be aware of everything that we say on the internet because it is permanent. Before, we would just nod our heads in agreement, but now we should be taking it seriously.

  1. This is very extreme in my opinion, however I am personally ok with media surveillance in our country. I feel that if it is being used to protect our country and its people it is useful and important tool. I do think it is crazy that today the NSA has the technology to carry out surveillance like this.
