For the most part, when you hear the word selfie you usually associate it with every girl in the world taking a picture of herself on a daily basis.
Now, selfies are the new internet and social media phenomenon. It started a few weeks ago at the Oscars, when he host Ellen DeGeneres took a picture of herself (referred to as a selfie) in front of the whole crowd at the Oscars during her introduction. Later on in the ceremony, Ellen found a few actors, including the likes of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence from the stands to include in her picture then posted it on twitter for the whole world to see.
Within minutes the picture spread to thousands of people, and many others followed suit in the following weeks. From professional athletes to talk show hosts, everyone is getting in on the fun of taking selfies and sharing it for all of their fans to see. Even in the midst of competition, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray had some time to put down their rackets and capture the moment.
There's no question that Twitter and the prominence of the internet nowadays is a huge contributing factor for why so many of these pictures are being taken. These people are not taking pictures simply to keep, but for the amusement of their followers.
If you ask me, it's a bit of a weird trend that probably will not last too long. However, I suppose it's pretty funny that the trend has even become this popular, I'm sure Ellen had no idea this picture would stir up everyone's imagination as it has!

I've wondered before what the most popular tweet on Twitter has ever been. Thanks to the huge numbers that famous 'selfie' generated, I got to find out. It is surprising to me that the selfie got so much attention but even on a everyday basis it is definitely a frequent occurrence to see selfies across social media.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how the term "selfie" hasn't been around that long, but it feels like it's an age-old term. I was amazed by how quickly Ellen's Oscar selfie took off on Twitter. Selfies are pretty amazing in the fact that literally everyone participates in this fad eventually.
ReplyDeleteI work at a movie theater and the other day a young teen girl took a SnapChat selfie in between ordering her popcorn and getting her money out to pay. I was in disbelief and a lot of my coworkers were confused on what we had witnessed.
