Instagram And Your Taste Buds

Did you ever think that by posting pictures of food on Instagram that it would end up affecting your taste buds?

A study that was conducted at Brigham Young University's School of Management showed that posting pictures of your food on Instagram can end up affecting you and your friends' taste buds. The article stated that '"You're becoming tired of that taste without even eating the food," said Professor Ryan Elder, who co-authored the study. "It's sensory boredom. You've kind of moved on. You don't want that taste experience anymore.'"

I find this article very interesting. Lisa Good actually posted this article on Twitter this past week. When I read the article I have to admit that I was not surprised by the findings. I have a Pinterest account and I made a board just for food. I have to agree with these findings in this article because after looking on my food board on Pinterest, I started to feel sick from all of the sweet looking food.

I think it’s very interesting how just looking at a picture can affect our taste buds. It’s definitely something to think about. Just wait until they invent "smellivision", then we will all be in trouble!

  1. Very interesting article. I personally don't use Pinterest often but I do have an account and have browsed some of the food photos before. However, I'm an active Instagram user and find my self constantly liking photos of food. In addition, I often find myself posting photos of food that I make and want to share with my followers. Speaking to your blog post, I can definitely relate to the idea that constantly seeing photos of food desensitizing my taste buds for that particular food. More specifically, I too, like you, when looking at photos of sweets feel as though it turns me off from actually wanting it.

  2. You never really consider how social media may affect something such as our taste buds. It's really interesting to me that this is actually being talked about and studied. I agree that looking at posts of food on Instagram or Pinterest can have an affect on our taste buds and whether or not we are interested in that food after viewing it on social media. Also, "smellivision" will be a whole new issue I'm not sure I'm ready for!

  3. I agree with your article. Many time have I experienced seeing good food on Instagram that has made me hungry! I feel I do look at these pictures when I'm bored. This is an interesting study to blog about and I'm interested to look up more about it!

  4. This blog on the article spiked my interest because food pictures are notorious on instagram. I can't say anything because I too post photos of my food on instagram all of the time. It's actually a weird concept if you think about it. My instagram feed is usually filled with the same foods which include pizza, mexican and sushi almost every time (including from me). Sometimes I do notice myself looking at the picture and feeling as if my craving becomes satisfied and I am no longer interested in the food, but other times looking at the constant photos of these foods makes me want them even more!
