Narrating Your Life...Through Snapchat!

Facebook, meet your latest competitor...Snapchat! The ephemeral picture messaging app has released a new feature called Stories, its take on Facebook's newsfeed. Your friends can now view a reel of your most recent Snaps, but of course in typical Snapchat fashion, the pictures and video only last for 24-hours. Not familiar with Snapchat Stories? Check out this video for a quick overview:

Snapchat stated in the company's official blog that, "Your Story always plays forward, because it makes sense to share moments in the order you experience them." This idea highlights one of the most significant strengths of social media holistically, the power to connect human beings through a visually stimulating narrative. Snapchat Stories are particularly powerful since they are comprised strictly of photos and video. Furthermore, from an interactive standpoint, this new Stories feature brings users to the app through alerts regardless of whether they received an actual Snap.

Switching gears slightly, I'm personally very interested in how Snapchat can act as a marketing tool for brands to authentically connect with fans. In an article from Mashable.com, I found that Taco Bell has attempted to implement Stories into their marketing mix. The following was their first attempt at using Snapchat Stories to tell a very simple, brand-appropriate tale:

Pretty cool, right? This simple four photo story was pushed to their fans on Snapchat and tells a basic narrative of a seemingly typical "Taco Bell run." The Stories feature provides the owner with a list of all the people who watched the Story. Thus, allowing for easily measurable and quantifiable reach data. I hope to see other brands use Taco Bell as a roadmap for developing effective strategies to use Snapchat Stories to connect with their respective target audiences.

  1. I like the idea of these Snapchat stories, although I don't believe they are going to affect Facebook very much. I don't associate the two sites together very much when I use them, personally. I thought the idea of using Snapchat to promote business's is a good idea for the companies, though. They really will get their items on the minds of those looking at it, which will eventually force them to buy the product, even if unconsciously. Overall the Snapchat stories has been a success in many ways.
