After all these years...it's finally here?

Samsung has released their new smart watch, the Galaxy Gear, along with two interesting commercials advertising them. The commercials take you through a timeline of fictional watches from shows and movies such as, "The Jetsons" and "Star Trek". The kicker seems to be that after all these years of creating fake smart watches, Samsung has finally made a real one.

Although the commercials are so intriguing, the Galaxy Gear is actually receiving poor reviews. According to the article, the Galaxy Gear is bulky and useless. It also only works with one phone, the Galaxy Note 3.

Personally, I agree with the article stating that the Galaxy Gear is useless. I love watches, but this watch serves no real purpose or benefit. It's still something that you have to take out and look at which doesn't make anything easier or different than taking out a cell phone. It also only works with one phone which limits consumers and users. Despite my views on the actual product, I do really like the commercials and find them effective. The build up to the actual watch is intriguing as is the portrayal of the timeline of fictional watches from shows and movies. It really makes viewers get excited and lured into the product and being able to relate to wondering if a smart watch would ever be a reality.

  1. First of all seriously cool advertisements for the watch. Second, I think Samsung was more concerned with getting the product out there then the quality of the product. Samsung is obviously competing with Apple real hard, and to be honest Samsung beat Apple to the punch. My dad saw the commercial and was shocked Apple did not come out with a watch first. I think Samsung will make serious changes to this watch in a short amount of time. Will the Galaxy Gear beat the iWatch again? It's certainly a possibility.

  2. I think that the idea of the watch is very interesting and shows how technology has advanced, but the poor reviews show how competition between brands can get the better of them. I agree with Zach that Samsung was so concerned with launching the product quickly that they didn't mind the flaws. With Apple just recently releasing their new update and phones I'm sure Samsung felt the pressure to get back in the race. I think the first change Samsung needs to make is the watch's compatibility with other phones.

  3. This is an awesome idea, but some of the logistics to this design seem slightly flawed. One of my concerns for example is how calls would be made using the watch. The commercial shows a woman talking on speaker phone, which makes me think that there would be no private phone calls anymore. If these design flaws are resolved the product would be much more appealing to skeptics like me.

  4. I would agree with the comments above. The idea of the phone itself is very cool and innovative, and there are several features that are exciting to me. However there are a lot of logistical problems such as only using it with one phone. I think one of the main issues would be why have a smart phone and a watch that basically acts as a smart phone? They pretty much do the same thing; it's just an extra piece of technology to carry around with you and be responsible for.
