Is Twitter Starting to Lose the Social Media Battle?

Is Twitter Starting to Lose the Social Media Battle?

In the Social Media realm these days, it seems that Twitter is the king with a few close competitors fighting their way to take the throne. However, it is not quite that simple. There are many new up and coming Social Media sites that are starting to come out of the shadows. They are all different, and each one is trying to make it to the top.

Some of these fresh new sites include:
·      Snapchat
·      WhatsApp
·      Line
·      Tumblr
·      Instagram
·      Pinterest
·      Kakao
·      Reddit

These sites are growing in the number of users and accounts fast! The New York Times believes this quick growth in accounts could be from what analysts call the “cool element”. This “cool element” is a factor that makes these sites more desirable than the sites made before. This factor can’t be easily established but when it is, the successfulness of the site can be increased drastically.

Though these fresh new sites may have the “cool element” it seems Twitter is in no real danger of being swept away, and that is because of one simple reason. Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, puts that reason perfectly by saying, “The future of social is not going to be a winner-takes-all scenario, no service can be all things to all people.” So ultimately Twitter won’t be vanquished by one of its new foes, it may just have to more over a bit and share some of the pie that is Social Media.

  1. That "cool element" I agree is what drives sites popularity. Even if sites are making updates to increase interest it will only matter if the audience likes it. The idea that no service can be all things to everyone relates to how they decide what to give us. Twitter is primarily text based and they had to know that not everyone would like that style. I think to have a piece of the social media pie sites have to take risks and be simplistic. I am typically impressed by sites that can try to make any sense of what our generation, with short attention spans and shifting thoughts wants out of social media.

  2. I think that Twitter will continue to be a social media "powerhouse," so to speak. Having said that, I do think that they should continue to diversify and allow for change- because at the core, Twitter isn't all that compelling; it's a writing-oriented website that allows people to post about their day. The kicker is, however, that it's the main social media choice of your friends and your favorite celebrities...which is what drives the site. In order for Twitter to survive, they must be able to maintain their reputation as an outlet for "famous people," and remain dynamic and susceptible to change.
